SUBJECT: Approve appointments to the Allied Arts Board (AAB) with terms to expire June
30. 2021. as recommended by Council Liaisons Erik Peterson and Lvn Semeta
Statement of Issue:
There is a need to appoint three (3) of four (4) current vacancies on the Allied Arts Board. The
remaining vacancy must be a member of the Art Center Foundation and will be recommended for
appointment at a later date.
Financial Impact:
Not applicable.
Recommended Action:
Approve the appointment of Pati Kent, Paula Lazicki, and Hek Valdez to the Allied Arts Board
(AAB) with terms to expire June 30, 2021, as recommended by Council Liaisons Erik Peterson and
Lyn Semeta.
Alternative Action(s):
Do not approve appointments to the Allied Arts Board and direct staff accordingly.
Analysis:
Currently, the Allied Arts Board has four (4) vacancies. Three of the four vacancies being
recommended for appointment are the result of term expirations. Per Huntington Beach Municipal
Code 2.101.030, the fourth vacancy must be filled by a member of the Art Center Foundation. A
recommendation for this vacancy will be presented at a later date.
The vacancies were posted at City Hall and on the website. The applicants all presented
appropriate qualifications and expressed a high level of interest in participating on the board.
Each of the candidates was interviewed by the Council liaisons and their qualifications were
deemed suitable for the Allied Arts Board.
Each candidate demonstrates a committed interest in the field of art and in support of the arts in
Huntington Beach as summarized below:
Pati Kent has lived in Huntington Beach for 39 years. She attended the Art Center
College of Design and is a professional artist. She is a contract class instructor with the
City of Huntington Beach and teaches art classes.

• Paula Lazicki has lived in Huntington Beach for 38 years. She is a current high school
art teacher. Paula has her BA and teaching credential in the Visual Arts with a Master's
Degree in Instruction and Curriculum. She has experience in grant writing and is
involved with many different committees.
• Hek Valdez has lived in Huntington Beach for 25 years. He is a professional tattoo artist
and is also a painter and photographer. Hek is very involved in art and art culture and
has experience in organizing fundraisers and curating art shows.
