CITY COUNCIL MEETING — HUNTINGTON BEACH SCENIC
TRAILS COMMITTEE
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
From the coastal setting of the Bolsa Chica to the wooded areas of Huntington Central
Park, the City of Huntington Beach has an existing network of trails that offers rich
recreational opportunities while at the same time protects environmentally sensitive
habitats. This trail system will continue to expand with new trails in the Bolsa Chica area
and the future Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park. There is also interest in adding trails in
the southeast part of the City as part of the Orange Coast River Walk. The City's trail .
network would benefit from an organized effort to look at possibilities for expansion,
consistent messaging and way finding. For example, a Scenic Trails Map that guides
residents and visitors to trails of interest, parking and other facilities is needed. This map
can also be an educational tool to explain why certain areas should not be disturbed.
I recommend a Scenic Trails Committee be created for the purpose of developing a map
or maps; improving way finding, e.g., signage to the trailheads; and looking at
opportunities to increase the trail network. The Committee should have representation
from the non-profit Bolsa Chica advocacy groups, organizations, and government
agencies active in the restoration and management of wetlands and parks in the
community and the Huntington Beach Marketing and Visitors Bureau. I will be
recommending members to serve on the committee this week. I plan to provide those
names to the City Council at the meeting.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Motion to approve creation of the Huntington Beach Scenic Trails Committee.
