Subject: AGREEMENT WITH HUNTINGTON BEACH UNIFIED MOD L UNITED
NATIONS BOOSTER CLUB FOR USE OF SHELF SPACE AT MAIN STREET
LIBRARY ANNEX
V Statement of Issue, Recommendation, Analysis, Funding Source, Alternative Actions, Attachments: tz
STATEIVIENT OF ISSUE:
The Huntington Beach Unified Model United Nations Booster Club, a non-profit unincorporated
organization, has requested space to house United Nations reference materials to be used by
high school students.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the agreement with the Huntington Beach Unified Model ?Jn tpd Nations Booster Club
for use of shelf space at the Main Sts,eet Library Annex to accommodate United Nations
materials, and authorize Mayor to execute sane.
ANALYSIS:
Representatives of the Model United Nations Booster Clubs and their teachers met to explain
the dilemma of driving students to the UCLA Library to accomplish the needs for classes
studying United Nations and countries. In that some teachers have made several trips each
week to give students this opportunity, an alternative is necessary. Representatives were
asked by staff to investigate the possibility of sites located within the school district and
within the Orange County School System. The representatives recommend that the Main
Street Annex is the best solution for their need.
In that the circulation at Main Street is approximately one half of that of the other annexes,
this influx of interest would be a benefit to the community and the annex. The United Nations
Booster Clv<bs will arrange to acquire all the materials necessary for this collection and the
teachers of the classes will organize the materials. Members of the organization will staff the
space and assist the students on a regular basis.
The Library Board, at its January 17, 1984 meeting, moved to recommend to the City Council
that space be allocated to house the Model United Nations materials at the Main Street Annex.
FUNDING SOURCE:
None.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS:
1. House collection at the Central Library.
2. Direct staff to seek alternative sites.
