SUBJECT: Approve Youth Board appointments and reappointments with terms to expire
June 2015 as recommended by City Council liaisons, Mayor Harper and
Councilmember Hardv
Statement of Issue:
With high school graduations and one student not returning, six vacancies exist on the Huntington
Beach Youth Board, of which three members are seeking reappointment.

Recommended Action:
A) As recommended by City Council Member liaisons Matthew M. Harper and Jill Hardy,
approve the reappointment of the following students to a one-year term on the
Huntington Beach Youth Board with terms to expire June 2015:
Austin Smith — Edison High School Representative
Aurora Johnson — Huntington Beach High School Representative
Melissa Applebee — Marina High School Representative
B) As recommended by City Council Member liaisons Matthew M. Harper and Jill Hardy,
approve the appointment of the following students to a one-year term on the Huntington
Beach Youth Board with terms to expire June 2015:
Amanda Boyd — Edison High School At -large Representative
Darby Hughes — Edison High School At -large Representative
Natalie Anzivino — Huntington Beach High School At -large Representative
Mallory Matsumae — Marina High School At -large Representative
Ariana D'Zmura — Ocean View High School Representative
Hailey Hoyt — Ocean View High School At -large Representative
Alternative Action(s):
Do not approve the recommendations; request further review by liaisons.
Analysis:
Five Youth Board members have graduated and one member will not be returning, which has
created six vacancies on the 2014/2015 Youth Board. Recruitments at each of the high schools
resulted in several applications.

Aurora Johnson was an At -large member, requesting to be appointed as the Huntington Beach
High School Representative and Melissa Applebee was an At -large member, requesting to be
appointed as the Marina High School Representative. Austin Smith served as the Edison High
School Representative and is seeking reappointment to return to the 2014/2015 board. All
were instrumental in fundraising and event coordination for the 2014 Youth in Government Day
event.
After interviewing potential candidates, Council Member liaisons Matthew M. Harper and Jill
Hardy selected the following six new members: Amanda Boyd and Darby Hughes, both are
Sophomores at Edison High School; Ariana D'Zmura a Junior and Hailey Hoyt, a Junior at Ocean
View High School; Natalie Anzivino, a Junior at Huntington Beach High School; and Mallory
Matsumae, a Sophomore at Marina High School.
This board meets on the second Monday of each month in the fifth floor conference room at
3:30 p.m. The Youth Board consists of nine members (four high school representatives and
five high school at -large representatives). All board members serve for a one-year term
beginning July 1 through May 31 of the following year.
