Statement of Issue: c7d`

The Public Works Maintenance Division must replace a specialty vehicle that was damaged
beyond repair in an accident on February 24, 1998. Cl
w
Funding Source:
The 1.997/1998 approved budget for the Public Works Maintenance Division does not include
funding for the replacement of this vehicle. Therefore, an expenditure of $59,000 from the
City's Equipment Replacement Fund is necessary.
Recommended Action:
Motion to approve the replacement of this vehicle with an appropriation of $59,000 from the
City's Equipment Replacement Fund.
Alternative Action(s):
Deny replacement of this vehicle and forego and/or delay the striping and delineation of
residential and arterial streets.
REQUEST FOR ACTION
MEETING DATE: April 20, 1998 DEPARTMENT ID NUMBER: CY98-16
Analysis:
The Public Works Maintenance Division has two specialty vehicles (known as "deck trucks")
that are used to maintain painted school crosswalks and standard street markings (e.g.
STOP, SLOW SCHOOL XING, PED XING, BIKE LANE ONLY, etc.). One of these vehicles,
a 1988 Ford, was damaged beyond repair in a February 24, 1998 auto accident (see
attached Accident Damage Summary) and should be replaced at a cost of$59,000.
As a matter of policy, the funding for vehicle replacement is included in the City's Equipment
Replacement program. However, because this vehicle was not scheduled for replacement
until the year 2006, a "special" appropriation is recommended. This will enable staff to
procure the new unit in a timely manner without extensive disruption of the maintenance
schedule.
