As such, its condition and appearance must be maintained at the highest level of cleanliness and utility to demonstrate civic pride and to ensure the return of visitors, while at the same time encouraging them to recommend that their friends and neighbors also visit the Pier and by extension --Huntington Beach. It has been brought to the attention of this City Council that we do have maintenance needs that require correction prior to our busy summer season. The calendar is full of events designed to bring visitors to Huntington Beach from all over the world, and it is critically important that we always put our best foot forward to create the most inviting impression. Doing so generates goodwill, the return of visitors, and invites them to stay longer. Due to the large number of visitors to the Pier, City staff works diligently to ensure that the Pier is maintained appropriately. Staff drives the Pier nightly to provide regular custodial maintenance such as trash pick-up and dumping. In addition, detailed maintenance such as pier washing is provided regularly. This schedule has been budgeted to increase during warmer months beginning with the Memorial Day weekend; at which time, restroom cleaning will increase from two to three times per day and surface cleaning of the pier will increase from an average of two to three times per week. In addition to custodial maintenance, other maintenance is scheduled. Pier bench seating is replaced as needed through the memorial donation bench program. Three new benches are in the process of being replaced through this program. This maintenance also includes the replacement of broken trash receptacles with a sturdier cast concrete model with lids. To date, 14 of the 28 receptacles with lids have been ordered with delivery and replacement expected before July 4. Additional inspections of the Pier buildings and Pier structure are in process as well. APPROVED 7-0 To that end, staff works with the various concessionaires to ensure that items like painted surfaces and rooftops are appropriately maintained. In addition, sticker and graffiti removal is currently completed as needed and will be increased during the summer season. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Direct City Manager to schedule a City Council Study Session to advise the City Council of the current schedule and methods of Pier maintenance, with suggestions for in - budget improvements and recommendations for additional revenue generating opportunities such as enhancements to the existing binocular/telescope program.
