"Huntington Beach will miss
their Maverick"
Jack Kelly was first elected to the city council in 1980
and served two four-year terms. After two years off, he
was reelected to the council in 1990. During his coun-
cil tenure, Kelly has served as Mayor twice and as
Mayor Pro Tempore.
Jack was best known for his role as Bart Maverick in
the popular television series Maverick which aired
from 1957 to 1962. He began his acting career when
he was only seven weeks old, modeling in New York
City for Ivory Soap. By the time he was ten years old,
he was performing in Broadway plays.
In 1938, Kelly came to California to visit his sister,
actress Nancy Kelly, and to pursue his acting career.
He attended UCLA and later enlisted in the Army in
1945. After being released from the service, he re-
turned to New York, where he became involved in
television, appearing on many early shows, including
the Fred Waring Show.
He remained active in show business after Maverick,
doing voice-overs for radio and television commercials
and appearing in a recent television segment of The
Gambler.
Jack is survived by his wife, Jo Ann, and daughter,
Nicole.
