Jones: s-s 5 I am writing concerning the possibility of extending our variance, r4mber 4Af, concerning shich I believe Mr. Cscar Stri ckli n has spoken with ycj. We are enmeshed in an unfortunate circumstance, in which your help and that o". the planning commission and the council will be greatly appreciated. As you know, we received the variance on our new property in Mara of 1953.' We had hoped to begin construction as soon as our architect completed our working drawings, but we were unable to secure a good sale on our present property, the income from which was necessary fem construction of our nee church. Finally we were able to sell our property to the Baptist Church, and we have agreed to move within a year from the close of escrow. Also, our enforced delay has cI+used a serious over,Qrowding problem, especially in our church school and parking facilities. But at last the property is sold, the plrns co4rrleted, the bids advertised and Of-' contract has been signed with the builder, Mir. J. Peluso of kerg:.nrt Peach. We are ready in every respect to begin our long awaited church. But during this protracted effort of ours, in June 1g63, three months after the granting of our variance, the City Council sassed an ordinance stating that all variances should expire one year from their issuance date. What publ c notice of the ordinance there might have keen escaped our notice and we were not ctnd by the City of this change. When our builder applied for a Evilding permit he was notified our variance had expired and that he would have to institute the norml proceedings for the issuance of a new variance. This delay would seriously trouble our contractor and his subcontractors:,, at! ;:e has a'ready ordered much of t;ts material. It would be disadvantageous to us in that it would further delay ous;'-ulldinq, es- calate our building costs, intensify our problems of overgrowding, and delay the building of a church that can adequately serve the northirn portion of our city. In conclusion, we feel if the delay can be avoided by the cant'lagpance of our varisnca, Loth we as the church and the city as a whole stand to benetit tr'f this action. sincere r, ate. Minister
