The two main reasons fcr turning down the application wore: (1) Thoy felt that it would create a traffic hAsard by di.trauting drivers on Beach Blvd. (Using the Aamingues Slide for an ox=pls) (2) They felt tha}. the ntructurn was unattractive. (Without having soon or investigated the intended area of application) Whia,e Beach Blvd.is designated as a stato highway, it is rapidly b©lioni.ng the main Blvd. thorouahtars of the Citj of Huntington Beach, Approximately five new traffic lights have boon installed along the Boulevard which with the present lights, makl.rg the traffic halt every other intersection. limits to 30 to 55 M. this deri.nitaly j could not nause a haza.rd with traffic moving at Chia speed. Slidos are not considered particu7.ar:y unique at the present tine. For an example, we pointy out tbo slide constructed in Dominguez directly adjacent to tho San Diego Freeway, which has a speed limit of 65 MT3. and az vsual traffic speed of 70 to ?5 F.M. The City roquires a fifty foot cet-back to prevent visual obstruction and the 50 foot setback plus the 20 foot area of the slide front boing ground level could poitl er bei a visual obstruction or so spectacular as to create R traffic '1azard. Located along Beach Blvd. are numerous lighted, moving signs donigned to attract motorists, which should be much more distractin#1 to drivers than this slide. Anlnsaod signs are erected directly adjacent to the sidewalk in nitnernss instances. We do not Teal that a slide whose ma=J=.-u elevation is in excess of 200 feet from traffic,.lanes constitute aim more of a traffic hazard than anination signs adjacent: to the side. walk. Slides aro '.+sing erected in Anaholn, Buena pork, West Covina and many other cities. Slides are currently in operation An Dominguez, Gardena, Hermosa Beach, Sacrsmenta, San Ddego and many other cities. It 13 hard to believe that Huntington Beach wou,14 disapprove a structure that the above cities consider completely aaeortablo. It would seem that the City of Fiuntiru ton Beach should not depr;lve the children of the City ,from enjoying the pleasures of sliding on this attractive amusement. By improving the property, curbing, blacktorping and landscuprinp; the area, it Mould be a definite asset to the appearances of the area. At the present time, the lot is unpaved, the, sidovalks and gutters are not in, and the lot is in no way an asset to they cam=nfty, chb%kons, horses And goats roam the neighborhood. and these animal.. would be fenced away from the area. The City would raot only obtain tax revenues of an increased valuation, but the City would obtain sales 4.ax revenues (rota tho operation of tho overall project.
