Funding Source: Not applicable. Recommended Action: Motion to approve the name of "The Huntington Beach Ocean Strand" for marketing purposes for the city's bicycle/pedestrian path along the municipal beach. Alternative Action(s): Do not adopt a marketing name for the bicycle/pedestrian path. Analysis: The city has received a request from the Conference and Visitors Bureau (CVB) to name the city's bicycle/pedestrian path "The Huntington Beach Ocean Strand." In a recent survey by the Huntington Beach hotel/motel owners along Pacific Coast Highway, it was noted that the number one amenity people enjoyed most about Huntington Beach was the bicyclelpedestrian path on the city beach. The path provides an opportunity to travel miles in either direction on bicycles or roller blades or by jogging or walking. The CVB is working with the Hotel/Motel Association to market the beach as a destination attraction. They would like to be able to use the bicycle/pedestrian path in marketing programs. To do this, the path needs to have a catchy name. The CVB and city staff considered a number of names including "The Surf City Strand", however, both the CVB and staff feel that the path should be called "The Huntington Beach Ocean Strand." Naming the path gives the Hotel/Motel Association, the CVB, and other tourist -serving industries the REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION MEETING DATE: September 8, 1998 DEPARTMENT ID NUMBER: CS-98-010 ability to market the path and include it in lists of visitor -serving amenities available to tourists, e.g., example: "Visit Huntington Beach with its beautiful Ocean Strand where you can jog, bicycle, or just stroll for miles and watch the waves and magnificent sunset." Since the Huntington Beach Ocean Strand would be a marketing name only for the bicycle/pedestrian path, i.e., a moniker, it would not be in conflict with the city's current park naming resolution. At its August 12, 1998 meeting, the Community Services Commission unanimously recommended City Council adopt the marketing moniker of "The Huntington Beach Ocean Strand", and that it be used in the city's marketing program. We think the word "ocean" is more descriptive than "Surf City Strand." It also reflects the Ocean Grand Resort, soon to be built. "Ocean Strand" will be easier to add the advertising and flow with descriptions of the surrounding area. Thanks for asking for our input. Sincerely, r Diane Baker 101 Main Street, Suite 2A, Huntington Beach, California 92648. 714 - 969 - 3492 • FAX 714 - 969 - 5592. 1 - 800 -SAY -OCEAN RCA ROUTING SHEET INITIATING DEPARTMENT: Community Services SUBJECT: APPROVE NAMING BEACH BICYCLE/PEDESTRIAN PATH "THE HUNTINGTON BEACH OCEAN STRAND" COUNCIL MEETING DATE: September 8, 1998 Ordinance (w/exhibits & legislative draft if applicable) Not Applicable Resolution (w/exhibits & legislative draft if applicable) Not Applicable Tract Map, Location Map and/or other Exhibits Not Applicable Contract/Agreement (w/exhibits if applicable) (Signed in full by the City Attorney) Not Applicable Subleases, Third Party Agreements, etc. (Approved as to form by City Attorney) Not Applicable Certificates of Insurance (Approved by the City Attorney) Not Applicable Financial Impact Statement Unbudget, over $5,000) Not Applicable Bonds If applicable) Not Applicable Staff Report If applicable) Not Applicable Commission, Board or Committee Report If applicable) Not Applicable Findings/Conditions for Approval and/or Denial Not Applicable RCA Author: RH
