HomeMy WebLinkAboutCouncilmember Item for 2-3-2014 regarding Establishing a Hom0 o S2 CITY OF HUNTINGTO TO: Honorable Mayor and City and embers FROM: Council Member, Joe Ca DATE: February 3, 2014 SUBJECT: CITY COUNCIL MEMBER ITFM FOR FE MEETING — HOMELESSNE S STATEMENT OF ISSUE: 3, 2014, CITY COUNCIL In view of the fact that we have a growing number of homeless in our city and this has been a serious concern for both residents and businesses in HB, I am proposing the creation of a task force to address this problem. Many in the community have asked that this problem be addressed. We all heard from former Mayor, Ralph Bauer, about this subject. He noted that there appears to be an increase in the number of homeless people in Huntington Beach. Therefore, I am proposing to establish a "Homeless Needs Task Force" to address the homeless situation and identify what we as a city can do to help alleviate this problem. As explained in former Mayor Bauer's letter, basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, health, and self sufficiency should be a priority of the task force. I believe that forming this Task Force is a step in the right direction, leading to greater understanding and developing ways to help solve the homeless problem in our city. In addition, the County of Orange has also developed a "Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness." It is important for the task force to understand the recommendations from this report and how it may impact Huntington Beach. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Establish a "Homeless Needs Task Force" consisting of representatives from: City Council, Council on Aging, Interfaith Council, Beach Cities Interfaith Services, Police, other relevant service organizations, and school districts. This task force would work to find applicable solutions and resources to the homelessness issue, then report back to Council with their findings. Cc: Fred A. Request type: Comment Request area: City Council - Agenda & Public Hearing Comments Citizen name: Charles Lung Description: As a citizen resident of Huntington Beach, I support the establishment of a City Task Force to address the issue of the Homeless Population in Huntington Beach. This should be an outreach effort, not an effort to 'move them out' and should include participation by the City Manager, Police and Fire Departments, Faith Based Organizations, including the Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council, Non Profit Organizations that are already working on this issue, the Business Community, and interested Private Citizens. Please give this issue your thoughtful and careful consideration. Expected Close Date: February 4, 2014 Click here to access the request Note: This message is for notification purposes only.
