As the City Council/Agency is aware, one of our major businesses (Weiser Lock) has made
a decision to relocate their manufacturing facilities out of state. Recently, staff has
learned that they do plan to retain their executive offices in the immediate area, end
consolidate other portions of their business operation in a new facility, as well.
Authorize staff to proceed with negotiations regarding economic assistance as may be
appropriate and needed to retain Weiser Lock within the community. Staff will return as
appropriate for Agency consideration of any tentative agreement reached.
Weiser Lock is currently considering several locations to move their existing executive
offices and one is within the city, and to consolidate certain other operations. This will
occur even though their manufacturing facility is presently being relocated out of state.
In conversations that staff has had with Weiser Lock officials/representatives, it appears
that some level of economic assistance may be needed on the part of the Agency to retain
this business within the community.
Assistance by the Agency would be possible since the location wider consideration in
Huntington Beach is within our Huntington Center Redevelopment Project Area. While a
final determination cannot be made at this time as to whether economic assistance is
warranted, in staff's analysis, authorization to proceed with negotiations would be
appropriate at this time.
The opportunity to retain a major office use within the community as well as provide
space for additional employees affiliated with that firm could be of significant benefit to
the community. For these reasons, your authorization is being requested in terms of the
above recommended action to enable us to explore the level of economic assistance with
Weiser Lock representatives that may be needed to retain this important business within
the community.
ALURN IIM AMON:
Defer action at this time to proceed with discussions regarding possible economic
assistance for Weiser Lock.
