Funding Source: The Fireman's Fund grant amount is $16,360 and does not require any matching amount. Recommended Action: Motion to: Approve and authorize city staff to accept the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company grant award and expend grant funds. Alternative Action(s): Do not accept the grant award. REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL ACTION MEETING DATE: 6/18/2007 DEPARTMENT ID NUMBER: FD 007 Analysis: In March 2007, Fire Department staff applied to the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company Grant Program for funding for the purchase of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) air bottles. Staff was recently notified that $16,360 is being awarded to the city of Huntington Beach for this purchase. The Fire Department has an immediate need for replacement air bottles for emergency responders. Many of the bottles in the Department's existing inventory have reached the required Department of Transportation service life and must be placed out of service. During 2006, there were 12,382 emergency response incidents, including 464 fires, 201 hazardous materials responses, and numerous other emergency service responses that required the use of SCBAs. Accepting this grant allows the Fire Department to be better equipped for these emergency responses thereby ensuring greater safety for our citizens and for our public safety responders. Strategic Plan Goal: C-2 City Services: Provide quality public service with the highest professional standards to meet community expectations and needs, assuring that the city is sufficiently staffed and equipped overall.
