SUPPLEMENTAL COMMUNICATION Mmft Date: sI' 2017 r!A`a' o -, r, '2": ,_, 3 May 15, 2017 Dear Honorable Mayor Delgleize, Pro-Tem Posey and Distinguished City Councilmembers, On behalf of the Huntington Beach Downtown Business Improvement District, we would like to thank Councilmembers Brendan and Posey for bringing forth the Item 7 agenda item regarding improvements to our downtown destination. The HBDBID is very excited for this positive step to improve the experience for all of our visitors —both those from out of town, and those who call Huntington Beach their home. The HBDBID is proud of the many ways our organization works to make a positive difference in downtown and we are looking forward to working closely with the city to make an even greater impact. We encourage all of our councilmembers to support this measure. With gratitude and best regards, Steve Datdd Steve Daniel, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory 2016-2017 HBDBID President From: Matt Peterson [mattCablegendssportsbar.com] Sent: Monday, May 15, 2017 12:00 PM To: Brenden, Patrick Subject: Monday Council Meeting Hello Mr. Brenden, Thank you for the opportunity provided to lend our opinion relative to the cities consideration for infrastructure and beautification projects here in the downtown core. Our group came into Huntington Beach with completely realistic expectations, our core owners, myself included, all live and grew up locally. We understand this environment. Over the last year, in being here almost every day, I have observed a lot that I didn't necessarily expect. First, this is largely a transient visitor location, meaning, local residents are not the predominant visitors, folks that live outside the city are. Secondly, the weather plays a major role in visitors decisions to come to the downtown core. These are important considerations, because the obvious business deterrents, according to residents, are not what I've observed. What is obvious, is the lack of residents support of their downtown businesses, largely due a constant negative publicity drive played out in the social media space. Off season periods are challenging due to lower visitors and weather, neither should adversely affect business from a locals perspective. Attracting more visitors is a complicated endeavor, it requires efforts on a number of levels. This is not the focus of this piece. The focus here, is the immediate support of your proposal to focus dollars directly into the downtown core in the direction of needed infrastructure repairs and deferred maintenance. City owned assets and property are in need of updating, repair, and maintenance. I'm pleased you are considering this project on behalf of merchants, visitors, and importantly, the residents. In our first year of operations here in Huntington Beach, I am pleased to report that we love the downtown core. It is a vibrant, well maintained zone that has wonderful support from the city, the Police Department, and the BID relative to promotions, daily cleaning, and marketing efforts. As a BID Board member, I am happy to see first hand, the passion for the neighborhood from other merchants, city staff, and residents. There is room for improvement, in both perception and the physical maintenance of the neighborhood. Thank you for recognizing and pushing this forward. As I have mentioned, I would love to help in any way possible, the success of the neighborhood is great for all.
