WEST STREET
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
We would like to clarify the name of"Goldenwest Street" as three words "Golden West Street."
Golden West Street is the appropriate usage because:
1. "Golden West" is a phrase that has been historically used for over 150 years throughout
the history of the State of California as a two-word phrase, similar to the term "Golden
State."
2. The predominant usage in street maps of the City of Huntington Beach utilizes the two-
word "Golden West."
3. In partnership with the Coast Community College District, we would like to acknowledge
that "Golden West Street" takes drivers and pedestrians to Golden West College, the
largest education facility within the city of Huntington Beach.
Signage on the 405 Freeway directs drivers to "Golden West Street." In spite of this, street
signs at intersections along Golden West Street within Huntington Beach use the two-word
format while others use a single-word format.
We are aware that the City, in 2009, went through a process to standardize the address
database for city-wide usage. That effort resulted in "Goldenwest Street" as the recommended
street name. All impacted outside entities, including: U.S. Postal Service, IPS (Intergraph—the
City's Police dispatch and records system), OC MSAG (OC Master Streets), and the Orange
County Assessor's Office, were notified of this change. Since 2009, all new street sign
installations have used "Goldenwest Street" pursuant to this resolution.
However, for the reasons noted, as street signs are replaced due to normal wear and tear, they
should be replaced as "Golden West Street."
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
1. Direct the City Attorney to amend Resolution No. 2009-77 "A Resolution of the City
Council of the City of Huntington Beach Changing the Names of Certain Streets within
the City of Huntington Beach"to reflect the name change to "Golden West Street."
2. Direct the City Clerk to notify all impacted agencies of the change.
