SUBJECT: Approve Youth Board Appointments/Reappointments
Statement of Issue: With high school graduations, three vacancies exist on the Huntington
Beach Youth Board, and six members are seeking reappointment.
Financial Impact: None
Recommended Action: Motion to:
A) As recommended by Council liaisons Devin Dwyer and Matthew Harper, approve the
reappointment of the following students to a one-year term on the Huntington Beach Youth
Board with terms to expire June 2012:
Andrea deJesus Edison High School Representative
Dallas Heyden HB High School Representative
Jennifer Lucas Marina High School Representative
Chelsea Ostovarpour Oceanview High School Representative
Megan Arriola At -large Representative
Quentin Cronk At -large Representative
Br As recommended by Council liaisons Devin Dwyer and Matthew Harper, approve the
appointment of the following students to a one-year term on the Huntington Beach Youth
Board with terms to expire June 2012:
Samantha Sharkoff At -large Representative
Lindsey Thomas At -large Representative

REQUEST FOR COUNCILACTION

Analysis: Three Youth Board members have graduated creating vacancies on the
2011/2012 board. Recruitment at each of the high schools resulted in several applications.
Andrea deJesus, Dallas Heyden, Jennifer Lucas, Chelsea Ostovarpour, Megan Arriola, and
Quentin Cronk have requested reappointment for another year. All were instrumental in
fundraising and event coordination for Youth in Government Day 2011.
Andrea deJesus was an at -large member, requesting to be appointed as the Edison High
School Representative. Dallas Heyden was an at -large member, requesting to be appointed
rs the Huntington Beach High School Representative. Jennifer Lucas served as the Marina
High School Representative and Chelsea Ostovarpour served as the Oceanview High School
Representative this year, and both are seeking reappointment. Megan Arriola and Quentin
Cronk served as at -large members and are seeking reappointment to return to the 2011/2012
hoard.
C.ouncilmembers Devin Dwyer and Matthew Harper selected the following three new
members after interviewing potential candidates: Samatha Sharkoff, a rising sophomore at
Huntington Beach High School who served as Freshman Vice President in ASB and has
remonstrated her desire to contribute ideas to improve Huntington Beach; Lindsey Thomas,
a rising junior at Edison High School highly involved in Model United Nations who will
encourage Huntington Beach youth to become more interested in local government; and
Gregory Welker, a rising junior at Edison High School who participates in a variety of athletic
and academic organizations. Greg looks forward to providing input to the city.
This board meets on the second Monday of each month in the fifth floor conference room at
3:30 p.m. The board consists of nine (9) members (4 high school representatives, and 5 at -
large). All members serve for a one-year term beginning July 1 through May 31 of the
following year.
