Subject: CITY COUNCIL MEMBER ITEM FOR THE APRIL 6, 2015, CITY
COUNCIL MEETING— ENGRAVING THE NAME OF A. A.
WOODARD, HUNTINGTON BEACH RESIDENT KILLED IN
ACTION IN WWII, ON THE CITY'S WAR MEMORIAL
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
On December 7, 1941, Navy M.M.2c Woodard was killed in the sneak attack at Pearl
Harbor in World War II while serving on the battleship USS Arizona. Sadly, his name
was inadvertently left off our city's war memorial. He lived at 317 9t" Street. His name
is on the Pearl Harbor casualty list and is engraved on the USS Arizona Memorial at
Pearl Harbor. Sincere thanks to our City Historian, Jerry Person, for discovering this
oversight.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Direct staff to make arrangements for the addition of A. A. Woodard's name to the
Huntington Beach War Memorial. This action is to be completed before Memorial Day.
