HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinance No. 4007 establishing Chapter 5.100 of the Huntingcommunity about the harms of single -use plastics and advocate for a reduction in the use of these
products.
Many alternatives to polystyrene foodware exist, including, but not limited to; recyclable plastic
resins #1 and #2, compostable materials, aluminum and paper packaging. Biodegradable and
recyclable alternatives to polystyrene foam exist.
A Rainbow Environmental Services employee confirmed that most of the EPS foam they recycle
is from product packaging materials, NOT EPS foam foodware. The employee also confirmed
that Rainbow CAN recycle paper cups, even if the inside is lined with wax or plastic. We
strongly encourage you to invite an official from Rainbow to the City Council meeting on
Monday to help clear up any confusion among Councilmembers since recycling is NOT
standardized and can vary from community to community.
Attached is a photo from taken at Rainbow on November 14`' showing blocks of EPS foam that
are shedding/littering flakes of EPS foam as they await collection which is typically just once or
twice a year. Not very clean compared to their paper and cardboard recycling.
As the market broadens more economical bio-based materials and easier to recycle products are
making their way into the mainstream. Supporting the safer alternatives creates more green jobs
and can help prevent exposure to styrene.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter, your SUPPORT of an expanded
polystyrene foam foodware ordinance will make a difference.
Sincerely,
Bill Hickman
