• City owns and maintains 36 bridges
• Majority of HB bridges constructed in the 1960s
• Maintenance and rehabilitation is needed
• Federal grants made available through the Safe,
Accountable, Flexible, Efficient, Transportation
Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-Lu)
beginning 2005
• A Bridge Preventative Maintenance Plan
(BPMP) is required for grant eligibility

Bridge study included in FY 2006/07 Capital
Improvement Program
In February 2007, City Council authorized LAN
Engineering to complete BPMP
LAN performed review of Caltrans inspections
and visual inspection of current conditions
BPMP completed July 2007
Draft plan presented to the Public Works
Commission in July
Purpose — To maximize service life of bridges
Goals
Preserve bridges in a structurally safe and
serviceable condition

Correct structural maintenance deficiencies
as early and cost effectively as possible
Make efficient use of limited resources
