City Council Member Item for the August 20, 2018 City Council Meeting, Submitted by
Councilmember Barbara Delgleize - Potential Expansion of Pickleball Opportunities
STATEMENT OF ISSUE
Pickleball is a cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong and has grown in popularity over the
years. Pickleball is traditionally played on a badminton-sized court with special Pickleball paddles.
Pickleball is considered one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. Due to this soaring
popularity, cities throughout the country are now adding pickleball to their sports programming. There
are many reasons why pickleball is growing in popularity: 1) pickleball is ideal for all skill levels, 2) is
a social activity, and 3) is great exercise.
In 2017, the City constructed four pickleball courts on existing concrete pads at Worthy Park. Surf
City Pickleball holds a tournament every year in August. This is a USA Pickleball Association
sanctioned tournament and attracts over 200 players each year. With the popularity of this sport
growing, it would be prudent for the City to evaluate the feasibility of expanding the locations where
residents and visitors can play pickleball.
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Direct the Community Services Commission to review and provide recommendations to the City
Council on the feasibility.of expanding pickleball opportunities within the community.

Subject:Tonight's (8/20) City Counsel Meeting
I was a speaker at tonight's counsel meeting and I spoke in favor of more pickle ball courts. Afterward another speaker
spoke in opposition to putting permanent lines for pickleball courts on top of existing tennis courts. He claimed it would
be too confusing. I spend half of my time at a condo in Bethesda, Maryland and I play pickleball there both indoors and
outdoors. The tennis courts at two of the community centers have permanent pickleball lines on them and the tennis
players do not seem to be confused by these lines in the least. They are colored lines and narrower than the white
tennis lines.
Furthermore, both community centers in Bethesda have pickleball games in their gymnasiums. They have permanent
pickleball lines on their basketball court and the lines are somewhat confusing to the pickleball players, but they manage
to adapt with few problems. I again urge you to not only construct more pickleball courts, but to add pickleball lines to
existing tennis courts.
I would also like to comment on a presentation to the board tonight about short term rentals. The speaker was urging
The City to eliminate the ban on short term rentals with the idea that they could be licensed, thus providing more funds
for the city. I live right on PCH in a condo and we have tried repeatedly to get The City to enforce the ban, with no
results. The City has told us they have no proof, even though we have provided them with the ads on VRBO for short
term rentals. THEY EVEN PROVIDE THE DATES AVAILABLE. If they can't even enforce the short term ban, they certainly
would not be able to enforce licensing. My wife and I ask for your help in ENFORCING the short term rental ban. How
would you like a large group of drunk noisy party animals in a room right next to your home on the fourth of July? Then
they leave their trash and empty bottle and cans lying all over the place when they leave.
Thank you for your consideration

Dear City Council,
As a 54 year resident of Huntington Beach, I am writing to encourage you to act upon the proposal to add more pickle
ball courts in the city. For decades I actively participated in beach volleyball and indoor club volleyball followed by
decades of tennis lessons here in the city. Now, with my knees showing their age, I have fallen for a new activity, pickle
ball. Lovely, friendly, welcoming individuals are using the Worthy Park courts, yet at times there is a 45 minute wait to play
a 12 minute game.
Lining the tennis courts at Murdy Park would definitely ease the congestion at Worthy Park, that currently services
participants as young as age nine to aging warriors like myself. Thank you for your consideration.

City Council, please consider having permanent Pickleball courts painted at Murdy Park. I have recently learned the
basics from Diana at Worthy Park. I had a great time and am so impressed with the skills, courtesy and kindness
emphasized in this sport by Diana. It would be a great addition to HB sports to provide these additional courts for fans of
Pickleball, old and new!Thank you! Rita Sipes, Huntington Beach resident.

Subject: Pickleball courts
To Whom it May Concern,
Pickleball is alive and growing.. having lined courts in Huntington Beach would be a much added
addition to our city. Please consider making this happen.. Did you know that in Indian Wells Tennis Center the Nationals
for Pickleball will be held on Nov. 3-11? In one minute after opening the registration for players they had 2000 players
register and another 500 preregister.. there will be over 45 pickleball courts being used with two stadium courts for the
finals..lndian Wells has committed to host this event for the next five years.
Does this tell you how popular pickleball has become and we here in HB enjoy playing. The other day my group tried to
get on one of the courts and we couldn't because of the number of players using them.
Again, please listen and help us get the 12 courts for our community.. It would be much better for our community than all
of the apartments you continue to approve.. thank you .

Subject: Pickleball Courts
As a long time residents and homeowners (since 1986) in HB, we want to express our support for building more
pickleball courts in HB. Additional courts at Murdy would provide a wonderful ,healthy, recreation opportunity
to HB residents! We use the courts at Worthy several times each week. We especially enjoy the fact that the
Worthy courts
have lights, allowing us to play in the evenings along with other HB residents.
Sincerely,
Maureen and Rob Moreland
