Haberle, Fire Chief Subject: Approve one (1) appointment and two (2) reappointments to the Harbor Commission, as recommended by City Council Liaisons, Mayor Semeta and Councilmember Erik Peterson Statement of Issue: The City Council is asked to approve an appointment to the Harbor Commission to fill one (1) existing vacancy, as well as two (2) reappointments to fill vacancies that will occur December 31, 2020. Financial Impact: Not applicable. Recommended Action: A) Approve the appointment of Brian Griley as a Member of the Harbor Commission through December 31, 2024; and, B) Approve the re-appointment of John Ochs as a Member of the Harbor Commission through December 31, 2024; and, C) Approve the re-appointment of Michael Van Voorhis as a Member of the Harbor Commission through December 31, 2024. Alternative Actions): Do not approve these appointments and direct staff accordingly. Analysis: The Harbor Commission is a seven (7) member advisory board to the City Council in matters pertaining to the Huntington Harbor, its beaches, facilities, and parks. The Commission advises on issues concerning waterway safety, general harbor infrastructure, water quality, usage, and Municipal Code amendments. The Harbor Commission also cooperates with other governmental agencies and civic groups in the advancement of the Huntington Harbor, including recreational planning, under the direction of the City Council. In addition, the terms of two (2) Members expire on December 31, 2020. The City advertised the recruitment for new members through announcements on the City's website, posting at City facilities, and at the October 22, 2020, regular meeting. Three (3) new applications were received. The City Council Liaisons to the Harbor Commission, Mayor Lyn Semeta and Councilmember Erik Peterson, reviewed the applications and interviewed the three (3) applicants. At this time, they recommend that Brian Griley be appointed to the Commission, with his four (4) year term beginning January 1, 2021. His application is attached. The terms of two (2) Harbor Commissioners, John Ochs and Michael Van Voorhis, will expire on December 31, 2020, and they have requested re-appointment for an additional four (4) year term. My parents were original owners in 1964 on Bolero Lane and we lived there all my life. Currently my wife and I live just about 20 doors down from that same house on Sirius Dr. We have lived at this address for 15 years, and 5 more on Trinidad Island. grew up going to Saint Bonaventure on Springdale,then Mater Do! in Santa Ana, and eventually made my way to Loyola Marymount. I When I was younger,I spent a lot of time at the `old'Huntington Harbor Yacht club learning to sail. I was one of the first Junior members they had. Around 2002 to 2008 1 became a Director on the board at the yacht club. My wife and I are active In the Huntington Harbor Philharmonic. j in 20091 was Grand Marshal of the boat parade, and again in 2012 1 helped organize and run the parade with 3 l other past GM's. am a qualified yachtsman with being on the water since I was 2 years old living on the water in the harbor. Through the years we have owned many boats ranging in size from small sailboats like Sabots and Hobie Cats to power boats ranging from 181 to 82'. We have owned 3 boats on the East Coast,and have navigated our boats to I Cuba, Bermuda for the America's Cup,and from Florida up the East Coast as far as Bar Harbor, Maine. We have spent several seasons in the Bahamas. While our boats have been home,we enjoy Catalina and have taken the boat down the Cabo San Lucas for several winters.
