19PPR,D✓CD 5- ,. (PLAT bA/-Avo, City of Huntington Beach File #: 21-057 MEETING DATE: 1/19/2021 Submitted by Councilmembers Moser, Delgleize and Kalmick - Condemning the seditious acts of violence at the U. S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and affirming the City's unwavering commitment to American Democratic Principles and Practices I recommend that the City Council unequivocally condemn the act of sedition and insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, and affirm Huntington Beach's unwavering commitment to American democratic principles and practices. City of Huntington Beach Page 1 of 1 Printed on 1/13/2021 poweW76Legistarlm iy CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY COUNCIL MEETING-COUNCIL MEMBER ITEMS REPORT TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: COUNCIL MEMBERS NATALIE MOSER, BARBARA DELGLEIZE, AND DAN KALMICK DATE: JANUARY 19, 2021 SUBJECT: CONDEMNING THE SEDITIOUS ACTS OF VIOLENCE AT THE U.S. CAPITOL ON JANUARY 6, 2021,AND AFFIRMING THE CITY'S UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO AMERICAN DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, domestic violent extremists including protestors supporting President Trump violently breached and desecrated the United States Capitol and threatened the health and safety of Congress, staff, and visitors. This event led to the deaths of five Americans, including a Police Officer and has been condemned worldwide as a domestic terror attack against the United States government and the ideals which have made our nation the historical standard bearer for duly elected and democratic self-governance. Of note, the agitators violated several principles that underpin American democracy, chief among them a commitment to the peaceful transfer of power. While the protesters at the Capitol may have grievances that are reflective of the great political divide and frustration that exists within our communities, the violence with which the protestors acted in an attempt to subvert the will of the country simply cannot be tolerated. These seditious acts must be discussed openly and denounced by community leaders if we are to learn from the mistakes of the past and prevent such heinous actions in the future. Therefore, I ask that the Huntington Beach City Council join me in unequivocally condemning the act of insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, and affirming our unwavering commitment to American democratic principles. And in acknowledging this violent event, I urge the City Council to recommit to and model democratic practices. Let us steady ourselves and return to the work of problem-solving through effective policy and thoughtful debate via our representative government and, likewise, between neighbors. And, let us work toward the goals of peace and trust-building in our community. By taking this action, it is my great hope that we are able to strengthen the democratic ideals that the protestors attempted to undermine, and that the Huntington Beach City Council use this opportunity to both isolate the insurrection as a standalone moment in history that we together overcome and work to heal the divisions which exist within our own community. RECOMMENDED ACTION I recommend that the City Council unequivocally condemn the act of sedition and insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, and affirm Huntington Beach's unwavering commitment to American democratic principles and practices. 2075 Switzer, Donna From: Fikes, Cathy Sent: Thursday,January 14, 2021 10:22 AM To: Agenda Alerts Subject: FW:Yes on item #24 From:Alison Tovar<alimtovar@gmail.com> Sent:Thursday,January 14, 2021 9:11 AM To:CITY COUNCIL<city.council@surfcity-hb.org> Subject:Yes on item #24 I am writing to encourage you to please approve agenda item#24. I am writing in support of item 24 on the agenda for the city council meeting on January 19. In a country - and a city - as divided as ours, I think it's important for us to come together to condemn violence, and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. It would be easy to brush this off as an issue irrelevant to our local politics. It isn't. Huntington Beach residents flew across the country during a pandemic to be part of the insurrection last week, and they have supporters here in our city, and frankly, on our city council. Councilmembers Delgleize, Kalmick, and Moser have shown a good deal of courage by adding this item to the agenda, and I hope all of our councilmembers will vote in favor. While federal law enforcement continues to investigate and charge those involved in the violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, local leaders should convey a strong message condemning the use of violence and threats to further personal views, political opinions, or to change the results of settled, certified elections. That should be common ground no matter one's political affiliation. On Wednesday,January 6,2021,the world witnessed the appalling attack at the U.S. Capitol, which delayed official certification of the results of the 2020 Presidential election-a long standing democratic tradition cemented into our nation's commitment to a peaceful transition of power. What we witnessed was an attempted erosion of that commitment. The destruction at the Capitol was the result of domestic terrorism and reflected our nation's vulnerable and divided civil society. Fortunately, our institutions prevailed and our next duly elected President and Vice President will be sworn into office tomorrow. With that said,we must remain vigilant in defense of our Constitution. Our democracy is our nation's best asset aboard and by far our most important weapon in promoting freedom across the world. As a retired Colonel in the United States Army, I fought in defense and promotion of those values. I am saddened to have witnessed not only that ideal being desecrated, but also by the needless loss of life of five Americans, two of which served in the United States Military. I strongly encourage the members of the Huntington Beach City Council to denounce violence and support this resolution. Sincerely, Thomas J.
