City of Huntington Beach Page 1 of 1 Printed on 929.2021 463 CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY COUNCIL MEETING—COUNCIL MEMBER ITEMS REPORT TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: NATALIE MOSER, CITY COUNCIL MEMBER DAN KALMICK, CITY COUNCIL MEMBER DATE: OCTOBER 5, 2021 SUBJECT: DEVELOPMENT OF A PLAN TO UPGRADE THE CITY FLEET TO ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES As auto manufacturers begin transitioning away from internal combustion engines, there is a practical need to begin preparing for the eventuality when gas and diesel cars and trucks are no longer being mass produced. Recently, General Motors announced that they plan to eliminate all gas- and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035 and Toyota by 2040. Here in the City, we have approximately 900 vehicles in our fleet; approximately 7.5% of our vehicles are currently powered by alternative fuels. As we continue moving ahead, it would make sense for the City to have a plan developed to guide the transition of our entire fleet to alternative fuel sources. RECOMMENDED ACTION We recommend that the City Council direct the City Manager to prepare a plan to transition the entire City fleet to alternative fuel vehicles. 464 Moore, Tania From: Lisa Swanson <lisainlb@ymail.com> Sent: Friday, October 1, 2021 3:22 PM To: supplementalcomm@surfcity-hb.org Subject: 2S. 21-747 Development of a plan to upgrade the City Fleet to Alternative Fuel Vehicles - SUPPORT Dear City Council Members. my name is Lisa Swanson and I am an 11yr+ resident of Southeast Huntington Beach I recently testified in support of Sustainability Plan development. and I would now like to support this related initiative to upgrade the City Fleet to alternative fuel vehicles. Of course, Huntington Beach should be transitioning away from gas and diesel-powered vehicles. h just makes sense." That was last week ... before an oil spill had fouled our ocean, beaches, and wetlands. (AGAIN! Yes, I've been here since the last time an oil spill polluted our coastline.) Last week I had a great number of reasons to support this agenda item, but today 1 am focused on just one and it involves the elimination of all offshore oil extraction happening off our coast. While Huntington Beach's fleet represents only a small percentage of the total number of gas and diesel-powered vehicles in southern California, even the longest journeys start with a first step. Please take that first step by voting YES on Agenda Item #25. Thank You. Please work to adopt renewables and get off of fossil fuel dependence as soon as possible. Huntington Beach can lead the way by adopting strong renewable content with OCPA which will allow all residents and businesses to choose renewables at a lower cost than current utilities with no tax dollars used. Item # 25 comment, I support the full adoption of a plan to transition the entire City of Huntington Beach fleet to alternative fuel vehicles. Thank You!
