Hopkins, Assistant City Manager PREPARED BY: Grace Yoon-Taylor, Senior Administrative Analyst Subject: Approve the appointment of Vanessa Chow to the Huntington Beach Human Relations Committee (HBHRC) as recommended by City Council Liaisons Rhonda Bolton and Natalie Moser Statement of Issue: The City Council is asked to consider the appointment of Vanessa Chow to the HBHRC to fill one unscheduled vacancy. Financial Impact: Not applicable. Recommended Action: Approve the appointment of Vanessa Chow as a member of the Huntington Beach Human Relations Committee through December 31, 2025, the end of term for the current unscheduled vacancy, as recommended by City Council Liaisons Bolton and Moser. Alternative Action(s): Do not approve the recommended appointment, and direct staff accordingly. Analysis: The Huntington Beach Human Relations Committee (HBHRC) is a 9 member advisory body to the City Council with a mission to "inspire and promote mutual understanding, respect, safety, and the well-being of all in our community through education and engagement." There is one unscheduled vacancy on the Committee due to the resignation of Committee Member Chris Hoff. The City advertised the vacancy and recruitment through the following means: posting of Notice of Vacancy on the City's website, Civic Center, and libraries, and the City's social media platforms. Eleven applications were reviewed and considered for appointment. After deliberation, both City Council Liaisons recommended Vanessa Chow to fill the vacancy, whose term is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2025. City of Huntington Beach Page 1 of 2 Printed on 6/1/2022 powered'14 LegistarT'l File #: 22-445 MEETING DATE: 6/7/2022 With 21+ years of professional experience in law enforcement, Ms. Chow holds the rank of Sergeant at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and is responsible for managing its $3.6 billion dollar budget and being a point person between the Sheriff's Department and diverse community groups and leaders. She is also a certified instructor of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and has been assisting the HBHRC in a volunteer capacity this year. I have been interested in applying for the committee for some time and have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity. I intend to build relationships with our public safety departments to ensure a safe environment for constituents.
