It is my feeling this is just an opportunity to place our city in a Negative Light and Run to the Press to report on it. The Corrupt Three would like nothing more than to make this seem like a City-Wide problem when in fact it was localized to One Street in One Neighborhood and likely by One Person. The Corrupt Three will use this statement to bolster their False Claims that the City of HB is made up of White Supremacists, Antisemitism, and LBGQT Hate Groups. This is their thinly veiled effort to make any opposition to the LBGQT influences on our children, Hate Speech when in Fact it is Free Speech. This is not Mosers first attempt to deny Free Speech, I remember her agenda to limit what we could speak on during public comments, If the Corrupt Three do not agree on a subject, it must be Hate Speech. I am also against a possible proposal to create a City Ordinance for the City's Libraries. I understand parents may want to control what their children see and read, but it's up to each family to make their ow decisions. Not the opinion of a few. Restricting the library's ability to have certain books made available for parents to decide sounds like taking our liberties away. Members of the American Library Association are usually librarians with a master's degree. Keep obscene material out is already illegal at state and federal levels. My family has lived here for since 1994. In my opinion, we are denouncing something that does not exist. The HB culture does not represent hate. Maybe thugs from outside of HB that are engaged by political agendas; but,not from our residents. In fact, that is one of the primary reasons other than coastal that attracts people to HB..the HB vibe. Never have I witnessed or been part of or associated with any HB residents who fit into this 'hate category'..or any for that matter. There are already laws in effect that address this. I do believe that this is a bigger agenda for Bolten, Moser and Kalmick. They continue to say that there is 'hate by Huntington Beach residents'. I find it very suspicious that these flyers went out while Moser continues to support the interfaith council who have demonstrated hate themselves. Bolten, you knew that GCT filed a lawsuit,by the smirk on your face during the meeting when Mr. Gates mentioned he had received no notice or knowledge of a lawsuit regarding the Air Show. We saw the financial summary. What I suspect is that YOU and your anti HB mates want to see is the document with conditions that they agreed on that have nothing to do with financials so that this can be provided to Carr to assist in her lawsuit if it is true that the city did not defend her. Or, it could be that you just want to do an anti HB propaganda spin. Clearly the three of you are working against HB's welfare and doing everything to try to ruin HB's image. Moser, that woman who approached you in Central Park was telling you the truth and not hate speech...that you are ruining HB. Moser you have been disrespectful to residents speaking their opinions even calling them names. That's not hate? You will never be reelected along with Kalmick and Bolten. Mayor Strickland,Pro Tem Gracey Larrea-Van Der Mark, Councilmembers Pat Burns, Casey McKeon thank you for all you are doing for Huntington Beach residents. I am also gay. When I was discovering my sexual orientation.when I was young, there were no resources available to me to help me navigate through this coming out process. I was too afraid to talk to anyone about it, especially my parents. How reassuring it would have been to go to the library and read about other people experiencing the same issues I was facing alone. That is what libraries are.for-getting information, researching ideas, finding yourself in other peoples'experiences by reading fiction written by people who have suffered through the process and want to make it easier for others. By forcing minors to ask adults to take books out of the library for them, you are thwarting one of the a major reasons books are in the library-the ability to explore whatever you want on your own, even for minors. Especially now, when the suicide rate for LGBTQ-trans minors is skyrocketing. Another point, reading books in libraries does not make teens more sexually active. Not having reproductive health education is what has been shown to lead to increases in teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, not reading fiction. People who really care about children will make sure that accurate sex education is available to them. With girls as young as 12, 13 getting pregnant, waiting until they are 14 or older for accurate sex education is too late. The idea that pornographic and obscene materials are being made available to kids in our public libraries is absurd. One of the books in question that Mayor Pro Tem Van Der Mark has used as an example in the past, "Gender Queer," is in the adult biography section as seen when searching the library catalogue. Librarians are professionals with degrees and I trust them as well as families to be able to access materials of their choice without our city attorney prescreening books which is effectively censorship and book bans. I believe this false notion that kids are being exposed to inappropriate materials is simply a distraction from the likely action that many LGBTQ+types of books will be blocked from older teens. I am an English Teacher and as an educator and an LGBTQ+ ally who knows that representation reduces suicide rates, I find this agenda item to be very disturbing. This agenda item is anti-freedom and anti-choice and is a red herring. We should be supporting our libraries and encouraging kids to read as they grapple with massive amounts of disinformation and the new world of A.I. This agenda item itself is based on misinformation. I also support agenda item#19 as the words of the mayor denouncing the hate-filled-fliers and the actions of the council majority are at odds with one another. Speaking out against kids who are encouraging love and tolerance and banning the pride flag sends a message to the community about what types of public safety the council prioritizes and it isn't that of the most marginalized and vulnerable youth. The Navigation Center has shown by it being filled, and well utilized, to be one of the cities programs, to address the needs of the homeless, and community, and actually there is a need for another site as well. Without a shelter, the police are not able to enforce anti-camping and anti-loitering laws. Item 18; I am against the proposed Book Ban, and the plan to part ways with the American Library Association. This is an over reach by the City Attorney ,and current City Council, and it takes away the responsibility of those who have been professional trained to make those decisions. It is an overreach. Item 19- I am in favor of the proposal that"The City Council of the City of Huntington Beach denounces antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate" Many of the decisions of the new City Council of HB, intended or unintended have increased tensions in our city, and even though feelings of intolerance were here before, people now have a voice, to express hatred towards the LGBTQ community, the Jewish Community and those of another race. Decisions to restrict the flag, stop invocations by the Greater Interfaith Council, not to pass the Housing Element-to allow Affordable Housing, have fostered these views of intolerance. Allowing people to speak to others at City Council in demeaning and hateful ways, fosters permission to talk and act in this way. I am writing to denounce Resolution 18 set forth by our council member, Gracie Van Der Mark, and to support Resolution 19. I have been disheartened by the various national ploys to conflate queer communities with child grooming, pornography, and just general danger to children. Gracie Van Der Mark's resolution to change our library policies is a thinly veiled attempt to bring hate to our community and to follow in the divisive national trend of culture war politics. If you wanted to protect children, we as a city, would create a community where ALL children are welcome, regardless of their gender or sexual identity. No reasonable human being wants to make pornography accessible to children and I would personally never support such access. This is not at stake. Instead, the current city council is trying to drag our beautiful city away from inclusiveness to a hateful past, where queer members of the United States were considered dangerous to children and less than others. This is a smoke and mirrors attempt to censor LGBTQ literature in our libraries. There is an attack on education, including our teachers and our librarians, nationally. I do not want HB to get involved in the messy, distracting, and divisive culture wars being waged across this country. The American Library Association which is comprised of roughly 50,000 members, has set library standards since its inception in 1876. Without question, its members are far more qualified in their backgrounds, training and experience to distinguish what constitutes obscene and pornographic material than the Huntington Beach City Attorney. We find any attempt to ban books or control our public library reading material to be inappropriate, uncalled for and an extra unqualified censor. Please consider the values you have set forth for your own conduct, among which are "Humility, Social Awareness and Integrity." The time and resources you have at your disposal have come from all community members, not just some. Rather than banning books and seizing control over our library, we ask that you invest your power of your privilege as leaders to ensure that Huntington Beach is a community known for its stand against all forms of discrimination and diversity. It is our sincere hope that each of you is committed to a more inclusive and compassionate community for and we will all be safer and more "people-centric' for it. Sincerely, Thomas L. As HB residents, we oppose item 18, re the proposed book ban for city libraries. The idea would be an unconstitutional imposition of extreme religious views into the function of our public library, which is to serve all users regardless of faith or political views. Professional library staff are fully capable of choosing materials for our public library. Concerned parents can screen out anything they feel is unacceptable. Item 18 would also require the city attorney to determine what library materials are legally obscene. This is not a proper role for a city attorney, especially the HB attorney's office which seems stretched with a heavy workload already. Please vote NO on item 18. We support item 19, a motion for the city to denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate. This is a simple statement of tolerance that everyone should support, especially given ongoing hate incidents in our city. Please vote YES on item 19. Please. Ban hate. Not books. I believe it is a parent's right to decide what their child can or cannot read, not some conservative elected official. No one, including our city attorney, Michael Gates, should have the decision making authority to dictate what books are "obscene" and therefore not available to the public. As elected officials, you likely feel pressure to take action to solve problems that improve our community. As unique individuals, you probably have strong opinions on many of the divisive issues playing out across the country. But at a time when political polarization is feeding on itself, our hope is that you can resist the pressure to enter the political fray.As you know better than most citizens of HB,our city is strongest when our elected leaders collaborate and compromise to solve problems and provide services. Injecting the partisan divide into local decisions is sure to degrade the crucial relationships and trust you need to solve local issues. As residents of this community since 1997,we ask you to be vigilant in protecting the rights of all of your constituents and ensure that we create a community in keeping with the"OneHB"outlined in the city's strategic plan. The time and the resources you have at your disposal have come from all of your community members, not just some. Earlier this year, this City Council was reminded that the Pride flag was originally displayed at City Hall in June, 2021, after a "White Lives Matter" demonstration ended in violence in April of that year. It was a signal that everyone was welcome in Huntington Beach, and that hate would not be tolerated. This Council then voted 4-3 for an ordinance that now blocks that flag from being flown at City Hall. Earlier this year, this City Council was also reminded that the Interfaith.Council was originally created in response to racistand antisemitic incidents in Huntington Beach, and then asked to provide invocations before Council meetings in response to still more hateful incidents in the city. The Interfaith Council is a powerful symbol and outstanding organization. This Council then voted 4-3 to "fire" the Interfaith Council as providers of invocations before Council meetings. Either of those 4-3 votes could have been accompanied by this statement. In fact, minority members of the • Council suggested it at the time. It was clearly a choice not to send this message at that time, which was a message of its own. It is now past time to set this right, and to put the City Council on the right side of a fight that has gone on for too long in Huntington Beach. It is also time for city leaders to reexamine the exclusionary populism that can fire up a crowd of supporters but • also send a dog-whistle to violent outside groups. • Moore, Tania From: teray Stephens <teray.stephens@gmail.com> Sent: Monday, June 19, 2023 7:03 PM To: supplementalcomm@surfcity-hb.org Cc: Teray Stephens Subject: Opposed to prop 18 &support prop 19 I am an HB resident and I am totally opposed to prop 18 which bans books. As I moved from the appropriately partitioned children's section to the YA's section and then to the adult's section, I relished in a spectrum of perspectives that helped form the person I am today. And that person is extremely appalled and horrified by item #18- Submitted by Mayor Pro Tern Van Der Mark - Selection, Display and Circulation of Library Books and Other Materials within Huntington Beach Public Libraries (HBPL). Libraries should forever be an inclusive place of learning; a place where one can travel through pages and experience things no one person could travel to or experience alone. Book banning has absolutely no place in Huntington Beach. What right does the city attorney have to determine what is obscene? Where will the book restrictions end? The First Amendment was crafted to protect the press (and by extension books and knowledge) from persecution and proposed policies like Item#18. Please do inform us of how you are to use the First Amendment to evaluate books? When I was in middle school at Mesa View,we read Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Even as a 12 year old, it was shocking to think of folks censoring books. That little girl had no idea that in 20 years time, she would be faced with the same totalitarian ideals in real life. It is extremely horrific and utterly embarrassing that Huntington Beach has fallen so low as to mirror a science fiction dystopia. Please right this atrocious wrong; reject item #18. I, and I speak for my family as well,full-heartedly stand with item#19 - Submitted by Council Members Kalmick,Bolton, and Moser-Denouncing Hate in Huntington Beach. We completely and totally reject anti-semitism,white supremacy, and LGBTQIA+ hate. We stand with the LGBTQIA+ community. We will continue to reject hate that is spewed in our community; whether it comes from folks on the street or those who sit in chairs on our city council. For those amongst us who proliferate hate and racism, we see you and we feel great shame that you represent our beloved town. I hope you all will do what is just and right. Everyone deserves to flourish in a community where they can read the books they want to read(and if they are minors -that conversation is between them and their parents!), worship the way that is best for them, and love who they choose to love. At the very least, folks should feel safe in their community! Folks should be able to grow, learn, and evolve into the best and truest versions of themselves in a compassionate town; something that is violently and traumatically stolen from them when racism and hate are permitted in HB. Item 18 I strongly oppose this measure and I ask all city council members to vote NO on this measure. Librarians and the American Library Association are trained professionals who have devoted their careers to selecting, maintaining, and curating reading materials for the libraries they maintain. To propose that the City Attorney and City Council Members should replace them as arbiters of the library materials purchased and made available to the public is in itself obscene. Allowing politicians and their appointees to censor and remove books and materials from the library is an abridgement of our most basic freedoms; it supresses the free exchange of ideas and knowledge; and at its worst is a tool to victimize and oppress minorities and marginalized communities. The motion to restrict items must absolutely not pass. The restriction of knowledge and material is a direct attack on freedom, something that all Americans feel strongly about. What comes across as "obscene"to one person may very well not be to another. Please do not follow the examples of Florida. That is a recent example that is relevant to all citizens of this country, and it is an example as to why this cannot be allowed. The material restricted there proved that it was an indirect attack towards certain communities, and we absolutely cannot have that happening here. We must try to let knowledge remain unrestricted to those who seek it, even if some people get uncomfortable. If this were to pass, would it end there? Who is to determine the definition of"obscene". We cannot let the actions of a few so heavily impact and restrict the lives of many. Following this,I feel it is fit to address the following item, 19. This feels like it should be a no brainer, though some will possibly provide resistance. Antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate cannot be tolerated. It singles out antisemitism, anti LGBTQ hate and white supremacy. It falls short of denouncing hate for all and is divisive. However, I don't see the value in passing an anti-hate item as everyone I know is against hate. The only ones that seem to use hate are progressives (that actually have regressive genes from drinking their own bathwater) when they have weak arguments that can't stand on their own merit. Like Ms. Moser tying some hate flyers to parents rejecting a sex grooming video in math class. I believe the hate flyers were printed by the very ones that claimed there is hate of the LGBTQ. Where is the anti —Christian callout. I guarantee you if that math teacher at Edison High School showed a biblical video clip that talked about Jesus she would been suspended or worse. We are not stupid. I don't hate LGBTQ people. I have gay and lesbian friends and they seem to live a happy life although its not for me. I do feel sorry for the transgender people just as I feel sorry for people with bulimia. They don't see the goodness in their bodies, instead they think they are too fat or have the wrong equipment. Just like the beautiful Karen Carpenter these people will die and sorrowful life if they don't get help. Finally white supremacy. Should I feel guilty because I'm white? Should I give away everything I earned because of my race? This is a racist statement. I and my family reject your racist agenda item. My wife is half Korean but she declares herself Caucasian because she says her race shouldn't matter. None of my children ever used their ethnicity as an advantage so we walk the talk. We know that developing this site will take an array of funding sources and collaboration with various public agencies. The primary objective is to meet the housing needs of all the city's residents. Sometimes that housing need includes access to certain physical and mental health care services. We all know that the County of Orange is responsible for providing services, and funding, to meet the health care needs of all our residents. They try to do this through CalOptima and the County's Health Care Agency. So, by offering health care at that site, it will add additional levels of responsibility and collaboration. As you move forward and identify a direction on the development of this site you must also identify a site(s) for a temporary shelter while the Cameron site is developed to its permanent. The direction you give to staff on how to move forward is critical to this time-sensitive project. Please keep in mind that the current transitional shelters are at full capacity. Item 18 - Oppose. Book banning is nothing new in this country, it is part of our DNA, yet court rulings have rejected them as unconstitutional. Our parents have the awesome responsibility to educate their children. In our country they have the right to delegate this responsibility to schools, churches, and other organizations. These organizations set up standards, policies and practices to carry out their duties. In our country there are ways for parents (and the community) to make their views known. I am opposed to any government agency reviewing books and materials based on some criteria established by the City Attorney's office to determine whether a book may be displayed and purchased. This is censoring and there is no place for this activity in our Democracy. Oppose this item, quickly, please. Item 19 - Support unanimously with the declaration that you each and as a governing body denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate. i As we get ready to celebrate the 4th of July, let's remember that our forebearers declared independence from a tyrannical dictator and oppressive government. Book banning is a form of tyranny no matter how you couch the language. Council, I'd like to offer my opinion for consideration, for what it's worth. My wife and I have raised 2 daughters here in Huntington Beach over the last 28 years. (We've lived here nearly 40 years) Our challenge when they were young was to preserve the innocence they were born with as children. There is time enough for them to learn to "ways of the world".So we protected them violence, pornography, and other influences as these are proven to be detrimental to mental health. I don't know the exact nature of the materials in question but I am strongly in favor of reviewing these materials, subject to a 1st amendment review by our city attorney. Therefore, I support#18. As to#19, why include some people and not others? Why divide our society into factions, pitting one against the other? If one group is"hated", it must be the other group doing the "hating".This creates strife and division, and in today's environment it is all too often towards a political end. The overwhelming majority of citizens just want to get along and go to their jobs, raise their families, and live their best lives. This instigating and provocation of division needs to stop coming from the city council. It's unseemly. Therefore I would not support#19 unless it was broadened to include EVERYONE of all races, creeds, colors, religious affiliations etc etc etc. Thanks for your consideration. Libraries should forever be an inclusive place of learning;a place where one can travel through pages and experience things no one person could travel to or experience alone.Book banning has absolutely no place in Huntington Beach. What right does the city attorney have to determine what is obscene?Where will the book restrictions end?The First Amendment was crafted to protect the press(and by extension books and knowledge)from persecution and proposed policies like Item#18.Please do inform us of how you are to use the First Amendment to evaluate books? When I was in middle school at Mesa View,we read Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451.Even as a 12 year old,it was shocking to think of folks censoring books. That little girl had no idea that in 20 years time, she would be faced with the same totalitarian ideals in real life. It is extremely horrific and utterly embarrassing that Huntington Beach has fallen so low as to mirror a science fiction dystopia. Please right this atrocious wrong;reject item#18. I,and I speak for my family as well,full-heartedly stand with item#19-Submitted by Council Members Kalmick,Bolton, and Moser-Denouncing Hate in Huntington Beach. We completely and totally reject anti-semitism,white supremacy, and LGBTQIA+hate. We stand with the LGBTQIA+community. We will continue to reject hate that is spewed in our community;whether it comes from folks on the street or those who sit in chairs on our city council. For those amongst us who proliferate hate and racism,we see you and we feel great shame that you represent our beloved town. I hope you all will do what is just and right.Everyone deserves to flourish in a community where they can read the books they want to read(and if they are minors-that conversation is between them and their parents!),worship the way that is best for them, and love who they choose to love.At the very least, folks should feel safe in their community! Folks should be able to grow, learn, and evolve into the best and truest versions of themselves in a compassionate town;something that is violently and traumatically stolen from them when racism and hate are permitted in HB. I am abhorred that this email is necessary.I hope Huntington Beach will continue to be better,to do better by everyone in our community. 1 Thank you for your time, Stephanie Turner • Moore, Tania From: •Fikes, Cathy Sent: Tuesday,June 20, 2023 4:39 PM To: Agenda Alerts • Subject: FW: 20 June 2023 agenda item 19 From: Dawn Crowley<older.than.dirt@hotmail.com> Sent:Tuesday,June 20,2023 1:57 PM To:CITY COUNCIL(INCL. Our city library system has a reputation of excellence, with highly trained librarians who must gauge the appropriateness of content with both children's safety and First Amendment considerations in mind. I find it highly problematic to shift that responsibility for screening children's books to our City Attorney. Also, it seems ill- advised to cut ties with the ALA, whose entire mission is focused on improvement of libraries for all members of the public. Also, concerning agenda item #19, I am in full support of a resolution by our city proclaiming our rejection of all forms of hatred toward any human being! Finally, I need to express my disappointment with the May decision to pull out of the OCPA, an organization that has brought great benefit to our community in the form of consumer choice and reduced net emissions. Thank you for your consideration of my concerns. Sent:Tuesday,June 20,2023 4:11 PM To:CITY COUNCIL(INCL. Identity politics' practicing Moser, Kalmick and Bolton(the segregationists)are pushing the idea that unless we 100% agree to celebrate sexual orientation as they do this somehow makes us hateful:_Hate is having a passionate dislike of something or someone. The only persons that most Huntington Beach residents have grown sick of are the intolerant segregationists pushing their identity politics and trying to destroy our unity and dictate to adults how we are allowed to think and behave as if practicing one love as naturally as we breathe is a negative. Most HB residents don't care what other adults choose to do in the bedroom and with whom. I will celebrate. the heck out of a person for serving in the military, gay or straight, because their service and sacrifice is commendable. Just existing or identifying as something different is not. The segregationists are appropriating the gay and transgender community but what are they really doing for them but being the very ones who are putting them aside just to point at them. I say segregating any group, putting them aside from everyone else, is what is hateful. Segregationists are destroying the advances of the civil rights movement and calling it"progress"because unity does not serve their purpose. Huntington Beach is truly diverse unlike the cheap fake version of it offered by backwards woke cities in this state where they like you to stick out your arm to show the color of your skin while giving the clear message that a difference of opinion is not tolerated. There is absolutely no way that the very people who were so intolerant of a difference of opinion should be given any power to decide what is hate and what isn't. This resolution is their Hail Mary pass to control others and frankly segregationists, you are the last people in this community who should be given this kind of power. It's.like giving an arsonist a job as a fire inspector. . • It's the only reason why the segregationists want to push this agenda so they can point to their own creation as proof that a problem exists where there is none. What this resolution seeks is the power to cancel a difference of opinion to label all opposition to identity politics as hate. Liberty rings too loudly in Huntington Beach for those who are intolerant of diversity of thought. Real diversity includes diversity of thought or it isn't. Moser, Kalmick, Bolton and all of you identity politics appropriating elitists - You ARE the isn't. Thank you to our newly elected city council for not letting the worst people in this community control everyone else with their manipulation and gas lighting. It's why you were elected-to stop the stank of greed that hides behind the appropriation of others. Let them be exposed by their self-serving virtue signaling, strutting naked in 1 their finest robes. HB is one love and love always defeats hate - it's why we don't want any creation born of segregationist hate. Thank you. Banning books is not only an outrage against free expression but takes decision making out of the hands of parents, as well as denying children and others the opportunity to see themselves depicted in literature. It will not accomplish anything, but to create legal expenses for our city. As stated by Glaad: Book [bans] threaten our First Amendment right to free speech, limiting or restricting access to educational and potentially life-saving information. In addition to stripping parents of the right to decide what is best for their children, they also threaten to silence already marginalized voices. Book challenges create an unsafe environment for vulnerable youth, who see their stories and themselves falsely described, and diminish their view of a future where they can be themselves and belong. As a 34 year Huntington Beach resident and business owner, I am appalled and sickened by this hideous Agenda Item 18 where Gracey Van Der Mark is attempting to CENSOR books in our Public Library system. The American Library Association and LIBRARIANS should be the guiding force in what is included in a Public Library. They have the training, experience, and education to oversee book selections. Local politicians and lawyers should NOT be deciding what is appropriate or inappropriate in a PUBLIC library. A public library is utilized by THE PUBLIC.This includes adults, kids, college students, teachers, professors and researchers. In no possible scenario, should a City Attorney decide what books a professor or researcher has access to. This is a fascist policy - when politicians decide what you or I can read, that's authoritarianism. This is not Nazi Germany. Despite Ms. Van Der Mark's prior attempts, we do not burn books in this country. Book banning and censorship are about marginalizing people, ideas, and FACTS. Understanding the viewpoints and lived experiences of other people is the cornerstone of a free society. We will not tolerate this blatant attempt at thought control. Ms. Van Der Mark claims that there is rampant pornography in the children's section of our public library. This is categorically false. I have spoked to a local librarian about this and she confirms - this is a LIE. A book about someone having two dads is not pornography. It is a book created to invoke thought and empathy about a different kind of family. That is OK. We can accept differences. That is what makes our free country great. There may be books with more mature content that are available in different parts of the library. Sorry, but 2nd graders are not accessing these books without parental guidance and approval. Are you dropping off your 2nd grader to roam the library alone and check out books you are not aware of?NO! This is a ridiculous scenario that simply does not happen. Let's talk about teens. If you think teens don't know about sex, or that gay people exist, that is just ignorant. Every teen has a cell phone with internet access in their pockets and can look up any topic about sex at will. This policy is not saving them from the evils of knowing that people have sex. The local government should not decide what is or is not appropriate reading for my family -- or for youth, teens, college students, professors and intellectuals who utilize a public library to learn about things beyond their current understanding. That is the purpose of READING. If seeing one picture in a book is able to manipulate your child, then you have failed as a parent. You have not raised a free-thinking person, capable of analyzing and deciding what they believe in. You have raised a follower that has been sheltered to the extent of fearing ideas that do not conform to their own limited individual experiences. i Sheltering feelings and censoring thought is not the path to an intellectual society, capable of coping in a modern global world. Instead, shielding people from uncomfortable subject matters makes us weak and gives free-thinking similar countries an advantage over us. We cannot raise a generation kept in a bubble with no coping skills. A good parent is open to discussion of difficult age appropriate subject matter with their children. Sorry but sex exists. Gay people exist. You cannot censor these realities out of our kids' lives. No one is trying to turn your kid gay or sexualize them. Reading about a penguin with 2 dads is not going to turn your child gay, but it may stop them from bullying their classmate with 2 dads. You do not get to decide what books I can and cannot access for my family. The City Attorney does not get to decide what is or is not "obscene content" for a Public Library. That is fascism. I am vehemently opposed to Agenda Item 18. Regarding Agenda Item 19: I don't know how anyone could be against denouncing hate, but somehow this city has gone off the rails. Yes, the city of Huntington Beach should denounce all forms of hate including antisemitism, white supremacy and anti LGBTQ hate. I am in support of Agenda Item 19. PARENTS should have the right to be making the decisions of book choice, not local politicians or lawyers. I support the 1st Amendment and the Constitution of the United States. We are a free thinking society with choice. Keep your fascist ideologies in your own homes please. We don't want thought control in Huntington Beach. I was encouraged to see the large number of community members there to speak against agenda item 18,#23-532,regarding the library. I have lived in Huntington Beach for almost 20 years, and I love the public library and our wonderful staff of librarians. I am firmly against agenda item 18 and any other effort by the Council or the city attorney to create a new content screening process or otherwise censor the contents of the library. Moreover,I am against the city issuing any statement opposing or"parting ways"with the American Library Association.
