HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council - 2025-59 RESOLUTION NO. 2025-59 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH OPPOSING PROPOSITION 50 WHEREAS, Proposition 50 is a California ballot initiative that seeks to amend the process by which Congressional districts are drawn in California; and WHEREAS, the City of Huntington Beach recognizes the importance of fair and equitable representation in Congress and the need for a transparent and accountable redistricting process; and WHEREAS, the current system of redistricting, established by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, has been designed to minimize partisan gerrymandering and to ensure that the voices of all Californians are heard; and WHEREAS, Proposition 50 would undermine the independence of the redistricting process by allowing for potential political interference and manipulation, thereby jeopardizing the integrity of our electoral system; and WHEREAS, the City of Huntington Beach believes that any changes to the redistricting process should be made with careful consideration and broad consensus among the communities they affect; and WHEREAS, the City of Huntington Beach is committed to preserving a fair electoral process that reflects the diverse interests and needs of our constituents; and WHEREAS,the passage of Proposition 50 may lead to increased confusion and division among voters, detracting from the democratic process and potentially disenfranchising communities within our jurisdiction; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Huntington Beach hereby opposes Proposition 50; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Huntington Beach encourages community engagement and education on the importance of fair redistricting practices, and supports efforts to maintain the integrity of the electoral process in California.
